Network outages

Description (last modified by )
I can't put a set of reproducible steps but every so often I can't access my VM. There is one network interface configured for NAT
When the network goes down a netstat shows that a large number of UDP listeners seem to be present for machine. I have NO UDP listening ports defined in my NAT setup and when the network is working "correctly" these UDP listen sockets do not exist.
To be honest I don't really understand why VB is creating UDP listen sockets of it's own accord at all!

I'm seeing the same issue here with VirtualBox 4.1.2 on amd64 Ubuntu lucid kernel 2.6.35. It is completely reproducible for me. The network hang corresponds with the increase in number of udp sockets and unfreezes as soon as the sockets are released, presumably due to timeout.
Before starting VM, netstat -lnup | wc -l = 17. After starting VM and waiting for ~1 minute doing nothing, the same command on the host gives 18. After doing some activity in the guest quickly (some mysql queries), the number of open ports reaches 401. The guest VM network hangs and comes back the moment the number above drops below 401 (e.g. 400). I assume virtualbox is reaching some limit in the maximum number of sockets it can open.

Thanks for description. So in you case this is "mysql queries", right? But does it mean that you open ~400 connection and do ~400 queries, or you open 1 connection and do ~400 queries?

Some more testing. The same VM on a similar 32-bit host system does not seem to have this problem. mysql is irrelevant to the problem. I've reproduced the problem using a vanilla lucid32 base, installing ruby on rails, creating a default vanilla rails application, running the rails server, and connecting to it from the host. Continually reloading the web page from the host will cause the number of open ports to increase until the network hangs.

Can I borrow your vm? If yes, please export it to ova and drop me mail on [vasily _dot_ levchenko _at_ oracle _dot_ com] I'll send you instructions how to deliver vm image to us.

My network connection isn't so great to send the whole image, but I can provide detailed instructions or script to run on a vanilla lucid box. Also, I was wrong before. The same problem does show up on a 32-bit host linux system. And it also showed up on two OS X machines. Here's also a much easier way to reproduce the problem. Start with vanilla lucid box. wget some random file, I used wget "http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.1.2/virtualbox-4.1_4.1.2-73507~Ubuntu~natty_amd64.deb". Ctrl-C it. Repeat. Each time you do this, the number of listening ports increases (4 for me). It's much harder to reach the limit this way but this should be enough to figure out why those extra listening ports are being created.

I should clarify that the wget is being run inside the guest VM and the number of listening ports on the host increases.

Well, it's acceptable behavior for TCP connections, while initial reporter has mentioned UDP.

I am referring to UDP. Running wget inside the guest causes the number of listening UDP ports on the host to increase.

Hm interesting, it should be DNS only, but why listening.

Looking though the comments above it probably doesn't matter any more but I'm running a LAMP setup in the guest. Both host and guest are CentOS 5.6 I will try the above, but for me seems to be related to external SSL connections coming into the guest machine.
Also: Is there anyway to "track" a ticket with email notifications. I only saw all this when checking back to see progess

Sorry I should also have said they are both the 64bit version

Hi there,
I have the same issue with a 32bit Windows XP host and a 64 bit ubuntu oneiric guest.
I'm not sure whether it is related, but even existing TCP connections through the NAT disconnect for me once the 400 UDP ports are open. It is 100% reproducible for me when I try to ping a host through the NAT. However, I believe that it is not the pinging that's the issue but rather the resulting reverse DNS queries.
So for example, I start an xterm in the guest that displays on the host through the NAT (seems to the Xserver on the host to be a localhost connection). Then I start a ping www.google.co.nz in that xterm. The ping gets to request 102 then the xterm becomes unresponsive. A netstat -a in a windows command prompt shows about 400 open UDP ports. A short while later the Xwindow vanishes (Xserver timeout).
My VBox version is 4.1.8.

Just an update to my last post in case anybody else runs into this.
I'm convinced by now that this would be triggered by any program in the guest that rapidly sends UDP packets from many different source ports. VirtualBox has to open a socket for each one on the host and since UDP isn't connection oriented, VirtualBox doesn't know when the application in the guest is done and has closed its socket. So VB has to keep the host socket open until it has seen no traffic for a certain time (seems to be in the order of minutes). The problem is, if VB exhausts its max open sockets limit it starts behaving very erratically. Ideally it should start closing UDP sockets in an LRU order, but I think it simply hangs trying to open the new socket which causes all sorts of issues (including the TCP connection drops I've described in my last post).
Now, the one app that is very prone to behaving exactly like that are DNS resolvers in libc. They fire off a new DNS query on a new port every time a name needs to be looked up.
Knowing this, I have worked around this VB Nat problem, by installing both resolvconf (from ubuntu precise! the oneiric one has a bug) and dnsmasq and adding the line query-port=0
to /etc/dnsmasq.conf
. This has the effect of channeling all DNS queries from the VM through dnsmasq and using a single UDP 'connection' from dnsmasq to the upstream DNS server(s).
So far I haven't had a single glitch since.

Does
VBoxManage modifyvm <your-vm> --natdnshostresolver1 on
or
VBoxManage modifyvm <your-vm> --natdnsproxy1 on
solve issue caused by DNS guest activity?

Replying to Hachiman:
VBoxManage modifyvm <your-vm> --natdnshostresolver1 on
I had the "too many lingering UDP connections" problem and this fixed it for me.
Interesting observation. Could you please attach the log file of the session when the issue occurs?
