com port created as host-pipe on kernel >= 2.6.23 are not connectable, so it's not useable. with kernel < 2.6.23 it works without problems. tested with virtualbox 1.5 and 1.5.2.

Connection refused means that no one is listening at the socket. Please could you post the VBox.log file of the VM when this fails?
