Replying to frank:
Does the same happen when you reduce the number of guest CPUs to 1? Does reducing the guest RAM size help?
I do not have this issue with 1 core and the same memory allocation.
An interesting error, I got this boot error while using 4 cores.

3.0.10 contains guest SMP fixes to address such issues. Reopen if necessary please.

This condition still occurs under 3.1.0. I have an AMD Phenom II X4 940 processor 3.01 GHz w/ 8GB of ram. My host is Windows 7 Professional and I'm running virtualbox 3.1.0. I have on guest vm that is ubuntu 9.10 amd64. It completely locks up a coule min after boot if I enable more than 1 cpu. I didn't see anything displayed on the console...just a hard lock in X. No apparent errors thrown in /var/log/syslog or dmesg.

I checked last night and saw 3.1.2 was available. I've run my vm all night configured with 4 cpus and everything appears to be working properly. In the past, it would lock up within minutes. Thank you for your assistance.

So it seems the problem was solved for beanfield with VBox 3.1.2. Please reopen if this is still an issue with VBox 3.1.2.
