Not Valid Win32 application

Hi, I tried to install some software on XP in Vbox and got the error, "not a vaild win32 application" this was only the start.exe file on the cd when initially trying to install. I then went into the real Windows XP partition and the same cd loaded perfectly!

Perhaps you could provide a bit more information as to which application is was? You could also try setting the CD mode to passthrough (manual section 5.1.3, CD/DVD-ROM and floppy settings) to see if that makes a difference. Alternatively, you could create an ISO image from the CD and try that in VirtualBox.

Hi Michael, thanks for your reply. I resolved the problem by updating XP with windows update! After I had done this the program loaded and installed correctly! :-) For the record the program was 'Cashflow Manager' which is economic software for the Australian Tax Office's 'business activity statement' (BAS). Hello. This problem has re-surfaced.

Different user. Different PC. Different version of WIN XP.

WIN XP SP3 (32-bit), patched up-to-date, in a VirtualBox 3.1.2r56127 running on Xubuntu 9.10-amd64.

I created a virtual HDD of fixed size (120Gb) and it is partitioned into nine drive letters: C: (primary) and D:~K: (in extended partition).

Reason for so many partitions: I am multilingual and have to separate critical programs and files by language (three languages x three drive letters) to prevent file corruption and to allow installation of the same pieces of software in different languages as installing different versions of the same software in the same partition screws up the Registry with overwrites. Also, certain data servers I need for work to do not permit anything other than IE.

So far, the problem has occurred while attempting to install WordPerfect Office 2000 (v.9 - English) and WordPerfect Suite 8J (v.8 - Japanese). I stopped trying at this point and have not attempted to open any German-language programs at all.

Host drive is enabled and AFAIK is set to permit passthrough.

Guest Additions is not checked in Devices -> CD/DVD Devices tab.

I am able to D/L and install software from the network.

I am able to view all there languages on screen.

Where do I go from here?

Replying to tokyotea:

FIXED.

A member of our local LUG suggested logging out of WIN XP and manually inspecting all pages under the VirtualBox Setup tab. This included unchecking, then re-checking all selections and verifying all file and hardware locations.

Although no changes were made to the setup (e.g. - no selections were made that were not previously made prior to the problem cropping up) it is now possible to install programs from a CD.

Hi. I was getting the same error message. I tried reinstalling Windows XP (pre-SP1), but found my attempts to install the Windows XP updater failed. So, now I cannot even update XP. I should add that 2 days ago I was running a Windows 7 upgrade from XP with no apparent problems. But yesterday I started getting the "not a valid Win32 application" message, which is what led me to reinstall.

I am running all this under Snow Leopard with the latest upgrades on a Mac Pro dual quad core, 16GB RAM, with a 100 GB SSD drive.

Hi If just you cant run a program from your CD/DVD drive, go to setting->storage , remove CD/DVD drive and add it again. It will solve your problem.
