#22289 new defect

Enabling 3D acceleration on VMs in Virtual Box 7.1.6 Prevents VMs from starting (VMs Abort)

Guest type: other Host type: other

Description

Configuration - Ubuntu 24.04 Host running 6.12 Linux Kernel w/ Virtual Box 7.1.6.

Issue: Starting VMs w/ the appropriate vGPU (i.e VBoxSVGA for Windows 10/11 Guests; VMSVGA for Linux Guests), with Guest Additiona 7.1.6 installed + 3D acceleration enabled, results in VMs aborting with NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005).

Disabling 3D acceleration allows VMs to start. VBox logs from the aborted runs w/ 3D acceleration enabled include a number of curious entries:

same here. (kde neon host. vbox 7.1.6 from the repos)

broke literally all VMs. Linux and Windows guests. Disabling 3D acceleration "solves" the issue.

error when starting: VBoxManage: error: Details: code NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005), component SessionMachine, interface ISession

Hit by this bug as well after a full system/package upgrade.

I'm using the Radeon 780M Graphics chipset on Ubuntu 24.04.
