#22173 assigned defect
Unable to Enable 3D Acceleration on any Virtual Machine (VirtualBox 7.1.0)
Reported by: | stonedev | Owned by: | pentagonik |
---|---|---|---|
Component: | GUI | Version: | VirtualBox-7.1.0 |
Keywords: | vboxmanage, VirtualBox Manager | Cc: | |
Guest type: | all | Host type: | other |
Description
Issue: When trying to set Enable 3D Acceleration
, an error is thrown that says "Failed to save the settings." The Details
field in the error window contains no text.
Steps to reproduce issue: Navigate to Settings → Display
. Tick checkbox for Enable 3D Acceleration
. Try to save changes by clicking ok
to exit.
Notes: This issue is not localized to a single virtual machine or OS type. I've tried to reproduce on the following guest OSes:
- Ubuntu
- CentOS7
- RHEL8
- RHEL9
I believe this is an issue with the VirtualBox Manager itself rather than the virtual machines. Setting other settings/properties work fine across all VMs.
Wasn't sure about how to upload log for the VirtualBox Manager. Please advise if possible.

I tested build 7.1.1-164842 and still get an error, but this time I get also a message:
The graphics controller does not support the given feature. Result Code: VBOX_E_NOT_SUPPORTED (0x80bb0009) Component: GraphicsAdapterWrap Interface: IGraphicsAdapter {13ee6eb4-06fe-406b-ad69-f6e08b0587a3}
This works in 7.0.20 on the same hardware.

Looks like fixed on my Windows 10 host and Windows 11 guest combination as of 7.1.1 r164917.
Thanks for the report. We already fixed the issue and a fix will be available in the next upcoming maintenance release.
