Windows 10 Guest does not Shutdown Completely

Reported by: cmccarron Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox-7.0.18
Keywords: Cc: cmccarron
Guest type: Windows Host type: Windows

Description

Was having issues with Video Drives in 7.0.14, windows 10 guest screen would go back then come back. Was also having weird mouse issues. So when 7.0.18 came out, I upgraded to it. Now the Windows 10 VM will not completely shutdown. I have to go into task manager and kill the process. I am currently running 7.0.19 which is having the same issue. When you kill it from task manager it leaves the VM in an aborted state.

To reproduce:

  1. Start VM
  2. Stop VM

We are seeing the same problems with a lot users at our site - with both Windows 7 and Windows 10 guests. Reverting back to 7.0.14 and the problems are all gone.

I've tested with stable releases 7.0.16 / 7.0.18 / 7.0.20 - but 7.0.14 seems to be last stable release without the issue.

This problem still exists in 7.1.0. I restored a version of my VM with the 7.0.14 extensions, changed pointing device to PS/2, booted to safe mode, uninstalled them, removed all hidden drivers then restarted in normal boot mode. With no extensions installed the VM will shutdown and restart like it is suppose to. Once I installed the 7.1.0 extensions, the VM hung on reboot with Not Responding and had to kill the process using task manager.

If I uninstall the "Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller" USB driver from the Guest before shutting it down, the guest will shutdown without issue.

Universal Serial Bus Controllers

Intel(R) 82801FB/FBM USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 265C
Intel(R) USB3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.0 (Microsoft)
Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub (USB 3.0)

It appears that VirtualBox was hanging on to old USB configurations. To fix I had to disable USB Controller support in the USB Setup screen and click the ok button to save the changes. I then enabled USB Controller support, then selected USB 3.0 (xHCI) Controller and clicked the OK button to save the changes. When I started the VM, I now only have the following in Device Manager. The VM now shutsdown without issue.

Universal Serial Bus Controllers

Intel(R) USB3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.0 (Microsoft)
USB Root Hub (USB 3.0)
