Description

Hi there, as part of the testing program, this is just to let you know that the current stable drivers (Virtualbox 7.0.8, Guest Additions) break VBoxVGA on Windows XP, in fact after installing and rebooting the screen becomes completely black.

How to reproduce:

How to reproduce: 1) Download VirtualBox 7.0.8 2) Install Extensions Pack 7.0.8 3) Download Guest Addition 7.0.8 4) Install the new Extensions Pack 5) Boot XP in Safe Mode 6) Install the new Guest Additions 7) Reboot in normal mode

the screen will then be blank, however the VM is responsive and you can easily turn it off via ACPI command from the Virtualbox interface. Reverting to the Guest Addition 7.0.6 155176 fixes the issues: http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/7.0.6/VBoxGuestAdditions_7.0.6.iso

This has been reported in the forum by me and other Beta Tester for the following builds:

Reported by FranceBB Date: February 3rd, 2023 Build: 7.0.7 r155584 (Development Snapshot) Status: Broken drivers with black screen on Windows XP x86

Reported by Simple07 Date: February 4th, 2023 Build: 7.0.97 r155730 (Development Snapshot) Status: Broken drivers with black screen on Windows XP x86

Reported by FranceBB Date: March 17th, 2023 Build: 7.0.97 r156271 (Development Snapshot) Status: Broken drivers with black screen on Windows XP x86

Reported by FranceBB Date: April 6th, 2023 Build: 7.0.97 r156683 (Development Snapshot) Status: Broken drivers with black screen on Windows XP x86

Unfortunately, all the reports on the Development Snapshot builds have not been considered and the faulty drivers have been included in the "stable" release of Virtualbox 7.0.8 and its guest additions. Now that the issue is effectively in production I've been able to open a ticket here in the bug tracker.

Upgrading from 7.0.97 r156683 to 7.0.97 r156982 solved the problem. :) Closing the ticket now. I'm gonna report to the forum too.
