#21582 new defect

Enabling 3D acceleration crashes Gnome Shell (unable to log in)

Reported by: bbert Owned by:
Component: 3D support Version: VirtualBox-7.0.6
Keywords: login gnome Cc: scottgus1
Guest type: Linux Host type: Linux

Description

Ticket created at scottgus1's request (https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=108357&p=534308#p534310).

Both host and guest : Debian 11.6 / Gnome 3.36

Hardware : Asus ROG G752VSK Graphics Card : Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Nvidia driver : 470.161.03

Extension pack 7.0.6 installed on the host, and guest additions 7.0.6 on the guest.

Unable to launch Gnome properly. After entering password in GDM, it tries to launch Gnome, but gets back to the GDM login screen after 2-3 seconds.

Tried several Wayland/X11 host/guest combinations to see if it was related, but the behavior was always the same, whether I used Wayland or X11.

Disabling 3D acceleration solves the problem.

The same VM works flawlessly in VB 6.1.42.

Forgot to mention that I also disabled all gnome shell's extensions, just in case. Same behavior.

In case this ticket gets more focus: are both issues (this and to linked one) the same cause?

Is this issue still present in the current version?
