Replying to birdy:
After it failed to install, I ran VboxWindowsAdditions-x86.exe manually and it installed without errors.
Unfortunately re-running the setup does not solve the issue for me. However using an older version of the guest tools such as 6.1.0 works and installs perfectly on a 6.1.8 host.

Just stumbled upon this error during installation on 6.1.10 (Vista x86 SP2 Checked on Windows 10.0.19640 x64 using VBox with WHP).
There is one more issue, but I don't feel like it deserves a separate issue, since if this issue is fixed, I expect, the following one will also disappear. Feels like Guest Additions installation rollback didn't work properly (if at all): VboxWddm driver remained, caused "Display Driver Model noncritical error detected." multiple times during the next boot (somewhere in the code called by dxgkrnlObtainModeSetAvailOnVidPnPresentPath), and, to crown it all, hit kernel access violation assertion (leading to bugcheck) with very obviously corrupted stack, the last seemingly-valid entry being dxgkrnl!<something like SubmitCommandList>...
Side note: VMware Workstation performs very poorly with Vista x64 SP2 Checked too (their GA analog fails installation too, for a completely different reason, of course).

I'm experiencing the same issue, trying to install the correct x86 guest additions on x86 Vista Enterprise (originally build from Internet Explorer developer VM OVA).
This is preventing shared folders from working, which is a major issue for usability of the VM.
After it failed to install, I ran VboxWindowsAdditions-x86.exe manually and it installed without errors.
