[VBoxSVGA with 3D] Crash in VBoxDispD3D-x86.dll when starting some programs

Reported by: cremor Owned by:
Component: WDDM Version: VirtualBox 6.0.12
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: Windows Host type: other

Description

When I configure my Windows 10 guest to use VBoxSVGA with 3D acceleration I can't start some programs. They immediately crash and the Windows event log shows that the crash happened in VBoxDispD3D-x86.dll.

In addition to the log and the crash details from the Windows event log I'll also attach a minimal sample program to reproduce the crash. It is just a small .NET WPF application that should show a GIF animation in a window.

Configuration details:

  • VirtualBox 6.0.12
  • No extension pack installed
  • Guest Additions 6.0.12
  • Host OS: Windows 10 x64 1809
  • GPU: Intel HD Graphics 530 with driver 26.20.100.6912
  • 2 monitors with 1920x1080 resolution
  • All monitors (both host and VM) at 100% scaling
  • Guest OS: Windows 10 x64 1809
  • Guest is running in full screen mode
  • Guest settings:
    • 3 of 4 CPU cores
    • 10 of 16 GB RAM
    • VRAM at maximum (256 MB)
    • All other settings are at their default for a Windows 10 x64 VM

Sample program to reproduce the crash

comment:1 by sunlover, 5 years ago

Hi cremor. Thank you very much for the detailed report. I was able to reproduce the crash and fix it. Please download and test the latest Guest Additions from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Testbuilds (6.0.x revision 133546 or newer).

I also do not see the artifacts anymore when viewing the gif animation from the ticket #18956 in the Windows photo viewer. Please test this too.

I can confirm that the test build VBoxGuestAdditions_6.0.13-133546 fixes the crash. Thanks!
