Windows 10 Issues with VirtualBox 6 VBoxSVGA Graphics Controller

Reported by: Androprise Owned by:

Description

I have setup a Windows 10 (1809 x64) VM on a linux host using VirtualBox 6.0.2. I have installed Guest Additions only (otherwise a clean Windows 10 installation. Everything seems to be working fine for a little while, then several strange things start happening. Most notably I am not able to run anything as administrator. When a UAC prompt should show the screen gets dark as normal, then instead of showing the UAC prompt I get an error dialog like the one below. This occurs when trying to run anything (not just the 7-Zip installer) as admin. When this starts happening I am no longer able to open the settings app (it opens the splash screen but immediately closes). Search also stops working in Cortona/Start. Some graphical glitches also start happening at this time.

All of these issues stop when I switch the Graphics Controller from VBoxSVGA to VBoxVGA.

The host System used is a Dell Inspiron 15 5570 (Core i5, 16GB RAM). I have tried hosting with Linux Mint 19.1 and Windows 10. Always with VirtualBox 6.0.2.

The same occurs with a Windows 10 1803 x64 guest.

Do a clean install of the guest additions.

I'm seeing the same issues with 6.0.6 (Fedora 29 host, Windows 10 1903 guest). A clean install of the Guest Additions doesn't appear to help.

In case it's helpful, here are some logs from Event Viewer for Windows Explorer crashes:

Same issue for me +1 By the way, it's gone when graphic acceleration is disabled. Might be a come-back of https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/17082 ?
