#18323 new defect

Video Memory Expanding to 256 MB Fail

Reported by: andrewf Owned by:
Component: other Version: VirtualBox 6.0.2
Keywords: video memory 256MB Cc:
Guest type: Linux Host type: Linux

Description

Can no longer extend video memory to 256MB using the command line:

VBoxManange modifyvm "vm name" --vram 256

This creates an error upon boot up and stops boot.

Legacy machines created in VirtualBox 5.2 seem to work fine with this mod when installed on VB 6.0.

It's usually better and faster, if issues get first addressed in the VirtualBox forums, a lot more eyes there. More than 95% of the issues are resolved over there, which keeps the developers focusing on the bug fixes and enhancements, and there is no need for another ticket to keep track of. For example, yours is not a bug and someone from the developers has to deal with it and close it as "Invalid".

You couldn't have a Linux VM with 256 MB of VRAM since I can remember VirtualBox (around 3.x), in the GUI at least, can't remember from the CLI. The max for a Linux VM was 128 MB. Only Win VMs with 2D/3D acceleration can go up to 256 MB. And that's for WinVista and greater only.

Sounds to me like they fixed/improved the runtime limit checking.

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
