#17940 new enhancement

For Fedora, Virtualbox is being built for unsupported releases (Fedora 26)

Description

currently, VirtualBox is provided as an rpm for Fedora 26, which has reached End-of-Life status. Those rpm seem to work fine in the two supported releases Fedora 27 and 28.

Maybe it's time to drop support for F26 and build VirtualBox on/for never Fedora releases.

You seem to be confusing EOL with NotUsed. And a company making a decision for its own products doesn't necessarily force the rest of the software ecosystem to do the same. There are still programs coming out that can be run (and are supported) on WinXP, OSX 10.6, Ubuntu 14.04, etc., etc.

As for the newer Fedora releases (that's what I think you meant, small typo there), your other ticket (#17939) regarding F28, has been addressed.

BTW, this is not a "Type: Defect" with a "Priority: Major", if anything it should have been a "Type: Enhancement" with a "Priority: Trivial". Although I fail to see how dropping support for widely used OSes would actually be an enhancement in itself...

Finally, please take a look at the "Suggestions" section of the VirtualBox forums. This would have been a more appropritate place to suggest your idea, instead of opening a ticket...

Thanks for your reply.

I am aware that EOL products are still being used but in my personal opinion that should not be encouraged by anyone or a company (no security patches incl. kernel at all).

As for the *Type* and *Priority* I agree with you - I just didn't pay enough attention to the form and left all those values with their defaults.

I am not asking to drop support for Fedora - but instead of building for an unsupported release it would make sense to build the software for a current release of that OS.
