3D acceleration broken on all guests since updating to 5.2.0

Reported by: willsweet Owned by:
Component: 3D support Version: VirtualBox 5.2.0
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: all Host type: Windows

Description

All existing guest machines using 3D acceleration show a black screen (except in the preview window) since updating to VB 5.2.0. New virtual machines are not affected.

I have had this issue after updating VirtualBox before but never bothered to report and just re-created all the virtual machines.

VBox.log for an affected machine is attached.

You do not have a problem with what you think you're having a problem. You are actually having a hardening problem. From your log (that was a single long line, I wrapped it):

00:00:06.623895 supR3HardenedErrorV: supR3HardenedMonitor_LdrLoadDll:
                rejecting 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvapi64.dll'
                (C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvapi64.dll): rcNt=0xc0000190

That's your AMD64 Nvidia card driver being rejected by VirtualBox because the certificate that it presents does not match what's in the security database. Please read really carefully the following FAQ: Diagnosing VirtualBox Hardening Issues. And update your drivers please. I can't find the reference now, but there were a couple of posts in the forums that were talking about updating the Nvidia drivers and fixing the problem. Speaking of the forums...

It's usually better and faster, if issues get first addressed in the VirtualBox forums. More than 95% of the issues are resolved over there, which keeps the developers focusing on the bug fixes and enhancements, and there is no need for another ticket to keep track of. For example, yours is most probably not a bug and someone from the developers has to deal with it and close it as "Invalid".

Oh, and BTW, if you disable 3D acceleration, that will most probably fix your problem...

Didn't realise I should have posted on the forums first, so apologies. Thanks for the link, resolved the issue by updating graphics drivers, uninstalling VBox and running installer as administrator with anti-virus disabled.

Excellent! It's OK about the forums, typical newcomer behavior :)
That's why I have this copy/paste message (the 2nd paragraph) that directs people to the forums. That's where the "action" is happening and if we can't solve it there, then it's time for the bug tracker.

I take it that this bug can be closed with (I guess...) a "WorksForMe" (?)
