Skype causes virtual machine to crash half a second after login completes.

Description

Running an Ubuntu 17.04 Guest on a Windows 10 Host, after starting Skype for linux virtual machine quits with an "instruction at 0x.. referenced memory at 0x0 memory could not be read" error. This happens very soon after skype logs in, does not occur if skype is not started. Everything else seems to work fine.

I seem to have added the log twice. Also the memory address being referenced is being reported as 0000 and the adress of the instruction that references it always seems to end with 7c

Please try one of the test builds. They contain some fixes to the audio component which I suspect might be the issue. Has this ever worked before?

So I upgraded to the test build. Also updated guest additions. Problem persists.

Sound did seem like a possibility given that Skype does display the contact list but never manages to play it's login sound. But the default media player and youtube play sound with no issue.

I don't know if anyone has had success running skype on an ubuntu 17.04 guest on a windows 10 host. I have never done it. I do remember vaguely skype working in a similar situation. But honestly I've never tried running skype on a regular install of ubuntu 17.04 so I suppose I will try that now to rule out the issue being with ubuntu or skype.

I would have thought skype on the latest ubuntu is a frequent enough use case though. Can anyone else confirm having had it work?

Also is it possible to fix the ticket attributes/categories? I seemed to have missed it when creating the ticket, I can't seem to see a way for me to edit it.

Could you please try out the following things to help further diagnosing the issue:

  • What happens if you completely disable audio in the VM settings and start Skype within the guest?
  • What happens if you change the audio device from AC'97 to HDA?

Are you able to provide a core dump of the crash? Please see https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Core_dump

Thanks!
