#15961 closed defect (fixed)
Vboxmanage --audio param are bad (maybe older in PDF)
Reported by: | ManWithNoName | Owned by:

Component: | documentation | Version: | VirtualBox 5.1.6 |
Keywords: | vboxmanage audio | Cc:
Guest type: | Windows | Host type: | all |
Description
In the actual PDF documentation for VirtualBox v5.1.6 on page 136 we can see :
--audio none|null|oss|alsa|pulse: With this option, you can set whether the VM should have audio support, and if so - which type.
If I try to use "oss" param per example, it doesn't work and I have an error message : "Vboxmanage.exe: error: Invalid --audio" argument 'oss'
My Host is Windows 10 and my guest is Windows XP 32 bits
With the command line "VboxManage --help", I can see that :
[--audio none|null|dsound]
-> on line 139 with VB v5.0.26
By using dsound, it works fine
Are params older in documentation (oss|alsa|pulse) ? Is it for other OS than Windows Guest/Host ?
Regards

OK, I see that you mean but there is a "documentation" category so I thought it was the right place here to mention incomplete infos as well as error in the documentation.
This is not very well specified in Chapter 3.7 too. Maybe we could add some informations to explain what are differences between Linux and Windows hosts and detail more available parameters in the vboxmanage --audio Chapter.

Updated the manual, the fix will be in the next 5.1.x maintenance release.
It's for Linux hosts. Check Chapter 3.7 of the User Manual.
PS. For future reference, it's better/faster if questions like that get first triaged in the forums ( https://forums.virtualbox.org/). 95% of the issues are resolved over there, which keeps the developers focusing on the bug fixes and enhancements...
