VERR_ACCESS_DENIED when creating images on network drive.

Reported by: arleslie Owned by:
Component: virtual disk Version: VirtualBox 5.0.8
Keywords: Cc:
Guest type: all Host type: Windows

Description

I have a network drive mounted to my computer which stores all of the hardware drive images.

The drive is mounted as a network share on my Windows Desktop. I'm able to create files and modify them without any issues.

When attempting to create a virtual harddisk, VirtualBox Manager reports:

Could not create the medium storage unit 'Y:\VM Hdds\Web Server.vdi'.
VDI: cannot create image 'Y:\VM Hdds\Web Server.vdi' (VERR_ACCESS_DENIED).

Result Code:
VBOX_E_FILE_ERROR (0x80BB0004)
Component:
MediumWrap
Interface:
IMedium {4afe423b-43e0-e9d0-82e8-ceb307940dda}

If I create the disk on my computer, move it over to the network drive, release the hard drive and reattach it, it works without any issues.

When setting the Default Machine Folder to "Y:\VM Hdds" it has no issues creating the vbox files there.

Please reopen if this is still an issue with a recent VirtualBox release and attach the VBoxSVC.log and add some information about the used remote share (network connection, whether it is served with samba or another Windows instance, etc.)
