This happens if to change display adapter from VBoxVGA to VMSVGA. When to change back to VBoxVGA or VBoxSVGA then installation works.

Tried also with clean install of MS Windows 10 EDU build 1809, 64-bit (also all current updates done) - same error with VMSVGA graphics adapter and guest additions. Changing back to VboxSVGA can be also guest additions installed.

The VMSVGA is meant for Linux guests, not for Windows guests. If you select the wrong settings, things will fail to work as expected...

This is still happening on Virtualbox 6.0.4 r128413 (Qt5.11.1) Ubuntu host, Windows 10 guest.
@socratis: If VMSVGA is meant for Linux guests, it might be useful to add this to the manual.

I've already notified the developers about the need to change the manual: https://www.virtualbox.org/pipermail/vbox-dev/2019-January/015180.html

Sorry, but if it is possible to select this adapter without a warning, then no one will know that this is a "wrong setting". I changed the adapter from VboxSVGA to VMSVGA in the hope that it will fix my Win10 guest system that shows only a black screen after upgrade of the guest additions, now this choice is even worse....
There are so many critical bugs in VirtualBox that let us users desperately try different settings over here and over there; if there are known hidden eastereggs that will never work for specific target guest os types, then please do something - hide them, or show a warning at least!
