#15901 new defect

Copyig files over USB hangs with USB 3 support

Reported by: nopaste Owned by:
Component: USB Version: VirtualBox 5.1.4
Keywords: USB 3.0 Cc:
Guest type: Linux Host type: Windows

Description

Windows 7 host.

I copied files from my Kubuntu 16.04.1 to an external tablet via adb push.

The file I copied is roughly 600 MB. The file takes about 3 minutes to copy from Windows, in VirtualBox Linux Guest the file is still stuck copying after 12 hours.

I started experiencing this problem since USB 3 support was introduced with VirtualBox 5.0. I do not have this problem with USB 2 enabled.

My USB port is the following: Intel(R) 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller

I had the problem driver version 1.0.4.225 then upgraded to 1.0.10.255, but had the same problem.

The external device I am copying to is a Texas Instrument Blaze Tablet.

This problem still occurrs with VBox 5.1.6.

Did you try with an older Linux guest, possibly in the past? Which one? Since you're hinting that 5.0 had the problem straight away I'm wondering what you have tried...

The reason for asking is that more recent Linux kernels have caused a lot of grief for us, containing bugs in the xHCI driver which need ugly workarounds.

I used VirtualBox 4.3.26 and 4.3.30 before and adb worked fine with the then available USB2.

I used Kubuntu 15.10 with VBox4, but had to update VBox to 5 in order for it to work with Kubuntu 16.04.

A native install of Ubuntu 16.04 without VirtualBox has no problems with USB, though, so I would assume the combination with VirtualBox is what causes the problems.

I also used VirtualBox 5 with Ubuntu 15.10 and 15.04 (as that was the newest Kubuntu, when VBox5 was released) and had the same USB3 problems.

I was able to reproduce this issue with a Nexus 5 device.

adb push _600mbfile.zip /sdcard

That command never completed.

This problem was reproducible on Ubuntu Mate 16.04.1 LTS.
